Trick of Tricks[]
"And you're certain this is the only way, trickster?" Mulan asked. Maui raised an eyebrow at the disapproval in her voice. They stood on a lonely atoll of ice and rock, somewhere off the coast of the Norse lands. The sea was a choppy plain of gray, and sea birds croaked raucously in the distance.
"If I wasn't, I certainly wouldn't tell you, would I?" He glanced at Danzaburou and Morgan Le Fay for support. The tanuki shrugged.
"Don't look at me. I'm still wondering why we didn't ask Sun Wukong."
"Because we know better than to include the Monkey King in any scheme requiring subtlety," Morgan said. She gave Mulan a pointed glance. "Though the same might be said of this one as well..."
"Careful," Mulan said, studying the enchantress. "I am not as quick as some to take offense, but that doesn't mean I will simply ignore your insults."
Morgan sniffed. "She's worse than Lancelot."
Maui sighed and rubbed his brow. Normally, he favored simple tricks. Pranks, really. The more complex the scheme, the more chances for it to fail - or worse, backfire. This time, however, some complexity was called for. Discordia was clever; a trickster in her own right. He needed help, and not just Danzaburou. Others with their own particular talents.
Morgan had been the first to join their little group. She hadn't been invited, but she'd insisted on helping them nonetheless and Maui had known better than to insult her by refusing her aid. It seemed Discordia's recent actions had endangered a number of Morgan's own schemes. Or so she claimed.
Maui cleared his throat. "If I could continue...?"
Mulan gestured. "Forgive me. I was simply wondering if this was the best way of punishing Discordia. Should we not simply take her into custody?" She had been dispatched by Yu Huang to determine the cause of Xing Tian's recent rampage, and was eager to render justice to the perpetrator.
Maui shook his head. "She won't learn anything from that, save to be more careful in her choice of victims, next time. No, we need to show her the folly of such pranks - and the best way to do that is to show her exactly what comes of it." He paused. "Besides which, it's already been set in motion. No way to stop it now, even if we wanted to."
Another member of their group made himself known a moment later, with a snort and a stamp of a cloven hoof that caused them all to turn. "She is close," Cernunnos growled, from where he crouched atop a nearby outcrop of rock. He'd moved so silently that Maui had not even noticed his arrival.
Cernunnos had been the seconds of the gods that Maui had approached. While he was no trickster, he was the foremost tracker among the pantheons. Even better, as a friend to Artio, he had good cause to want to see Discordia humbled. Once he had Discordia's scent, there was no way she could escape him - or them. With Cernunnos leading the hunt, they'd been able to catch up to Discordia in no time at all. "I can smell her on the wind. Like thunder and arrogance."
Maui nodded in satisfaction. Cernunnos wasn't referring to Discordia in this case, however. Maui had asked the horned god to track two goddesses for him, not just one. "Good. She's taken the bait, then."
He looked at Danzaburou. "Can we count on Loki to do as he promised?" Loki had been the first ally Maui and Danzaburou had sought for their scheme; he was perhaps the most infamous trickster of them all, and had been known to ally himself with other troublemakers such as Discordia and Set. But of late, Loki had, like Morgan, had shown some restraint when it came to his natural proclivities. Maui didn't trust him, of course; but they needed someone that could approach Discordia without raising suspicion.
Danzaburou pushed back the brim of his hat and snickered. Oh, I expect so. I offered him a bottle of the good stuff if he managed to get her here without alerting her suspicions." He looked at Mulan. "It shouldn't be a problem, regardless. Not with such tempting bait."
Mulan frowned. "I am not bait."
"Well, strictly speaking, you are," Maui said. "The only reason Discordia is going to show up is if she thinks there's someone to make trouble for."
"Namely you," Morgan added. Another reason we picked you over Sun Wukong. You are exactly the sort of target Discordia likes best...self-righteous and stiff-necked."
Mulan glared at them both. "I don't care for this plan," she said.
"So you've said," Maui replied. "But we're all choosing to ignore you." He paused and gave her a smile. "Thank you for your help, by the way."
Mulan nodded stiffly. "Yes, well, I am not doing it for you. The Jade Emperor had commanded me to seek out the cause of the recent unrest, and according to you, it's Discordia's doing. So, she must be taught the error of her ways."
"Well, yes." Maui's smile faltered, just for an instant. Strictly speaking, he had no proof that Discordia was the culprit behind Xing Tian's rampage; but it was the sort of thing she'd done before. But they needed Mulan's help, so it was best that she thought he was certain. "That's why we're here, after all."
Cernunnos stiffened suddenly. "She is here".
"Which one?" Maui asked.
"Discordia," Cernunnos growled. He sniffed the air. "Loki is with her."
"Excellent. Everyone knows what to do?" Maui asked, looking at the others. Receiving nods - in Morgan's case, a sneer - of affirmation, he smiled. "Places, then. Let's get ready."
He and the others, save Mulan, got out of sight. Morgan vanished behind a veil of illusion, as Cernunnos crept behind an outcropping and Danzaburou covered himself in a cloak the color of the rocks. Maui turned himself into a bird and perched up a boulder. Mulan seemed startled by how quickly her companions made themselves scarce.
Their quarry arrived moments later. Loki and - Guan Yu. Maui's eyes narrowed. To his gaze, so used to seeing through the tricks and traps of others, it was an imperfect disguise. Convincing, perhaps, to one who did not know Guan Yu well - or one who was distracted by concern. Guan Yu staggered, clearly injured, and kept on his feet only by Loki's aid. The real problem wasn't the glamor so much that it was sloppy; lazy. Why would Guan Yu be here, of all places? And why would Loki help one such as Guan Yu? Then perhaps Discordia was hoping Mulan would not think to ask such questions, in her worry for her fellow god.
"Mulan", Guan Yu called out, as he stretched a hand towards her. "It - it was Ao Kuang," he gasped. "He has made common cause with the great serpent, Jormungandr. The creature attacked me - flung me to the shore. We must stop him, before he-" He paused, and straightened, an annoyed look on his face. "What are you doing here, tanuki?"
"Enjoying the show," Danzaburou said, sitting on a nearby rock. He took a swig from his bottle. "Excellent disguise, by the way."
Maui took his own shape and strode towards 'Guan Yu', casually whirling his hook. "Yes. Only another trickster would be able to see through it. Or one familiar with your scent." He nodded to Cernunnos, who crept from behind Danzaburou's rock and growled at 'Guan Yu', blocking off his line of retreat.
"I have your scent, false one," the horned god snarled. "Run if you like. I can follow you wherever you flee."
Eyes wide, 'Guan Yu' took a step back, and looked at Mulan. "Sister, you cannot believe their lies. Trust what your eyes tell you..."
"Yes, do," Morgan said, as she wavered into view behind 'Guan Yu' He spun, eyes wide, mouth open as if to protest. Morgan murmured something and gestured. The war-god's form wavered and blurred, before parting like windblown smoke to reveal the much smaller shape of Discordia.
She stamped her foot in clear annoyance. "Do you know how long it took me to weave that glamor, sorceress?"
"Not long enough, clearly, if I could unmake it so easily," Morgan said. Then, you have always been lazy."
Discordia's eyes narrowed. "I'll show you lazy," she began and raised her hands. Unruly magics crackled between her fingers. She froze as the flat of Mulan's sword came to rest on her shoulder.
"Lower your hands," Mulan said.
Discordia did, a sour sneer on her face. She shot a glare at Loki. "You set me up," she spat. "You told me she was here alone, looking for Guan Yu. Traitor!"
Loki shrugged. "I have been called worse by people I actually like," he said, looking out over the choppy waters. He smiled cruelly. "Jormungandr isn't actually out there, by the way. That was another little fib on my part." He turned to Danzaburou and gestured. "My compensation?"
Danzaburou reached into his robes and pulled out a clay bottle. He tossed it to Loki, who pulled the stopper and took a sniff. Danzaburou laughed. "What? Don't you trust me?"
"No. I know you too well for that, tanuki," Loki said, taking a swig. He smacked his lips appreciatively. "Still, you seem to have played me fair. This time, at least."
"Well, there's always next time," Danzaburou said, cheerfully.
"What is going on here?" Discordia demanded, looking around.
"We're playing a trick," Maui said. He spread. "What do you think?"
Discordia made a show of looking around. "What trick? I see no trick, just a motley collection of dullards, spoiling my fun.
"Well, that's how you know it's a good trick," Maui said. He pointed his hook at her. "You have been very troublesome of late, Discordia. Causing difficulties, setting pantheons against one another. Are you trying to start a war between the gods?"
"No, but that does sound fun," Discordia said, with a harsh laugh. She looked at Loki and Morgan. "There was a time you two would have agreed with me."
"Times change," Morgan said, flatly.
Discordia snorted. "Nothing changes. You should know better - you are gods, after all." She shook her head. "You should really learn to have some fun."
Maui laid his hook across his shoulder and nodded. "Funny you should say that. You see, I decided to take a page from your book." He smiled widely. "So, we picked you a fight."
Discordia blinked. "What?"
"Oh, not with any of us," Maui continued. He turned, and shaded his eyes, peering east. "No, she's on her way. She'll be here in a few moments, I expect."
"Who?" Discordia demanded. "What are you talking about?"
"Why, Ishtar of course," Morgan Le Fay purred. "You went to so much trouble to catch her attention, after all. Provoking her like that, by comparing her to Ereshkigal. Very naughty of you. Not to mention foolish."
Discordia frowned. "But I didn't -"
"No, but Morgan is very good at illusions," Maui said "But you didn't just insult Ishtar, I'm afraid." He glanced at Danzaburou, who twitched his tail in pleasure.
"No, you had to ambush her when she started after you, adding insult to injury," the tanuki said, inspecting his claws for dirt. "Well, not you - me. But I sounded like you when I dumped a bottle of sake you on her that she probably won't care."
"What?" Discordia snarled.
"And of course, after that, you challenged her to catch you," Loki added, chuckling. "That was classic Discordia, really...even if it was actually me. Oh, she chased me for hours. If Morgan here hadn't hidden my trail, she might even have caught me."
"Why?" Discordia asked, staring at him in incomprehension.
Loki frowned. "Last time we spoke, I warned you to stay away from the Aesir, apple-thrower. We have problems enough of late without you adding to them by trying to send us into a nonsensical war with the Celts."
"Your problems are of your own making, not mine!" Discordia shrilled. She looked around. "That goes for all of you - what have I done that others have not done twice-over? You think I am the only one to stoke the grievances that simmer beneath the surface of the pantheons? This peace of yours, it is an illusion - a trick! No better than any of mine." She turned her glare on Loki. "You and Set and all the rest...you yearn for the chaos as much as I do, whether you admit it or not. You're just waiting for the right moment..."
"And what if we are?" Morgan said. "We might seize those opportunities that reveal themselves, but we know better than to cause chaos for the sake of chaos. There is only one way that ends - and we all know it."
Maui glanced at Cernunnos, who gave a terse nod. Ishtar would be here soon, and their trick still had one last twist. They were cutting it close, and could afford no mistakes. Else Ishtar might well turn her attentions to them, for lack of other options. He readied his hook. Discordia would attempt to flee; that much was a given. And they wanted her to do so. But not yet. Not until Ishatr had clapped eyes on her quarry.
"Hypocrites," Discordia sneered. "Call it what you like, but I know the truth. Sometimes I think I;m the only one who does." She took a step back, looking from one god to the next. "All I did was play a few tricks. It's not my fault if your pantheons choose to go to war over such things." She took another step back - then, with a cry, leapt into the air.
She didn't get far. Maui hurled his hook and snagged her ankles, dragging her back down to the earth. She slammed face-first into the ground, spluttering and cursing. Before she could move, Cernunnos had lept on her, pinning her to the ground. "Get off," Discordia howled, sparking magics erupting from her flailing hands.
The air was split by a sudden shrill whistle, and Maui looked up to see a rain of golden arrowed falling towards the atoll. "Scatter," he bellowed. He retrieved his hook and sprang back as the arrows thudded into the ground around Discordia. Cernunnos released her and scrambled clear with a startled snort.
A moment later, the last - albeit unknowing - member of their group arrived with a thunderous crash. Ishtar rose from her crouch, bow in hand. She looked around disdainfully, until her gaze fell upon Discordia, who'd clambered to her feet. "You," she said, in stony voice. "Little goddess with all the jokes. I have been looking for my first challenge and here you have so kindly offered up yourself."
Discordia, at a loss for words, stared at Ishtar. Then, without even a parting taunt, she flung herself skyward once again and hurtled away at great speed. Ishtar sniffed and reached for an arrow. Then, she paused and shook her head. "Too easy, I think." She look at Maui and raised an eyebrow, as if noticing him for the first time. "What about you?"
"I leave it up to you, great lady." Maui said. He bowed and stepped back. "You have the greater claim on this quarry, I think." Cernunnos, Mulan, and the others nodded in agreement, some more hurriedly than others.
Ishtar snorted in amused satisfaction and sprang into the air, in pursuit of her quarry. Maui watched them go, Ishtar's golden comet in pursuit of Discordia's erratic sparkle. Mulan joined him, as Danzaburou passed around a sake bottle, and Morgan spoke quietly to Loki. "Do you think she will catch her?" Mulan asked.
He shrugged. "No. Or at least not for long. But she knows we're watching her now. It might convince her to keep a lower profile from now on."
Mulan looked doubtful. "And if not?"
Maui set his hook across his shoulder and smiled at her. "Why, then we'll just have to come up with another trick, won't we?"
